De Pere, city, Brown County, eastern Wisconsin, a port on the Fox River, near Green Bay; incorporated as a city 1883. De Pere is situated in a dairy-farming region. Its industries include insurance and the manufacture of wood, metal, and paper products, machinery, and building materials. St. Norbert College (1898) is in the city. The French explorer Jean Nicolet passed by here in 1634. The name of the community is derived from the cataracts nearby on the Fox River, which were called the Rapides des Pères (French, “rapids of the fathers”) by French Jesuits, who established a mission here in 1671. De Pere and the city of West De Pere were merged in 1890.
