Beloit, city, Rock County, southern Wisconsin, on the Rock River, at the Illinois border; incorporated 1856. It is a manufacturing hub located in an agricultural area. Products include heavy machinery, engines, motor-vehicle parts, and footwear. Beloit College (1846) is here. A fur-trading post was established here in 1824, and the community was founded in 1837. The name of the city is thought to derive from two French words, bel (“beautiful”) and détroit (“strait” or “channel”).
