Spotsylvania, formerly Spotsylvania Courthouse, unincorporated community, seat of Spotsylvania County, northeastern Virginia, located between the Po and the Ni rivers. Spotsylvania was the scene of the bloody American Civil War Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, fought in May 1864 between Union forces under the command of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park commemorates this and other battles.
