Salem, city, seat, but administratively independent of Roanoke County, southwestern Virginia, near Roanoke, on the Roanoke River; incorporated as a city 1968. Vehicle parts, rubber products, furniture, clothing, and foundry items are produced in the city of Salem. Roanoke College (1842) is here. The community was settled in 1741, and it was laid out in 1802.
