The population of Richmond decreased from 219,214 in 1980 to 203,056 in 1990; its population was 194,173 in 1998. According to the 1990 census, blacks constitute 55.4 percent of the city's population, whites 43.3 percent, Asians and Pacific Islanders 0.8 percent, and Native Americans 0.2 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, are 0.9 percent of the people. The city of Richmond covers an area of 155.7 sq km (60.1 sq mi), and has a mean elevation of 5 m (18 ft).
