Hopewell, city, in, but administratively independent of, Prince George County, eastern Virginia, at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers; incorporated 1916. It is a port and manufacturing center; major products include textiles, chemicals, and paper goods. Appomattox Manor (1635), which served as General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters from June 1864 to April 1865 during the American Civil War, is here, and Fort Lee, a U.S. army base, is nearby. The area was settled in 1613, but Hopewell was not established until three centuries later, when a munitions plant was built here on Hopewell Farm, an estate dating from 1635.
