Brattleboro, town, Windham County, southeastern Vermont, on the Connecticut River; chartered 1753. A year-round resort in an agricultural region, it is noted for banking, printing, and distribution. The School for International Training (1964) is here. Cultural institutions include the Brattleboro Music Center, the Brattleboro Museum and Arts Center, and River Valley Performing Arts Center. The town grew around Fort Dummer (1724), the state's first permanent white settlement. It is named for an early settler, William Brattle.
