San Angelo, city, seat of Tom Green County, western Texas, on the Concho River; incorporated 1903. It has large wool, mohair, and livestock markets. Manufactures include medical supplies, oil-field machinery, clothing, footwear, and communications equipment. Angelo State University (1926) is here, and Goodfellow Air Force Base adjoins the city. Bartholomew “Bart” J. DeWitt (1825-78) founded a trading post here soon after the establishment (1867) nearby of Fort Concho (now a museum). For the community that soon developed, DeWitt chose the name Saint Angela, probably for his wife Carolina Angela. In 1884 the name was changed to San Angelo. Population 73,240 (1980); 84,474 (1990); 88,439 (2000).
