Orange, city, seat of Orange County, eastern Texas, a deepwater port on the Sabine River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; founded 1836, incorporated 1858. It is an industrial center located in a natural-gas and petroleum-producing area. Manufactures include petrochemicals, paper and wood products, water heaters, and fiberglass products. A junior college, the Stark Museum of Art, and a civic center are here. Industrialization was spurred after its harbor was improved in 1914. The city, a naval station during World War II, probably is named for the orange trees that once grew here. Population 23,628 (1980); 19,381 (1990); 18,643 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
