Mesquite, city in northeastern Texas, in Dallas County. The city is located in the eastern section of the Dallas metropolitan region. Manufactures include communications equipment, air conditioners and heaters, beverages, paint, aluminum products, and optical lenses; in the city is a major depot for transferring cargo between trucks and trains. A large community college is based in the city. The well-known Mesquite Championship Rodeo has shows every Friday and Saturday from April through September.
The community was founded in 1873 by the Texas and Pacific Railway as a depot, and incorporated in 1887. It was named for the mesquite trees common to the area.
