Lubbock, city in north central Texas and seat of Lubbock County. The city is located on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River near the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado, considered one of the world's flattest areas. Lubbock is a commercial and manufacturing center for the surrounding irrigated High Plains region, where cotton, grain, and cattle are raised. Major products include processed food, wine, electronic equipment, and cotton products. The area is served by Lubbock International Airport.
Lubbock is the site of Lubbock Christian University (1957) and Texas Tech University (1923), which operates several museum facilities, including the Texas Tech University Museum, the Ranching Heritage Center, and Lubbock Lake Landmark, an archaeological site. A branch campus of Wayland Baptist University (1908) is also in the city. A statue and walk of fame commemorate musician Buddy Holly, who was born in Lubbock. The Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge is located near the city.
