Killeen, city, Bell County, central Texas; incorporated 1908. Killeen is the seat of the University of Central Texas (1967) and a community college. Nearby is Fort Hood, one of the world's largest armored training centers and the site of Darnall Army Hospital and two museums. The city was laid out in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroad and named for Frank P. Killeen, a railroad official. It was a small farming and ranching center until the establishment in 1942 of Camp Hood (redesignated a fort in 1950). Grain and cotton are produced nearby. Population 46,296 (1980); 63,535 (1990); 86,911 (2000).
