Houston's population climbed from 1,595,138 in 1980 to 1,630,553 in 1990; its population was 1,786,691 in 1998. According to the 1990 census, whites constitute 52.8 percent of Houston's population; blacks, 28.1 percent; Asians and Pacific Islanders, 4.0 percent; and Native Americans, 0.3 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, represent 27.2 percent of the population.
The Houston Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area grew from 3,118,000 in 1980 to 3,731,000 in 1990; in 1995 its estimated population was 4,164,000. The Hispanic population has nearly surpassed the black population in the city, and Hispanics outnumber blacks in the metropolitan region.
