Fort Worth's population grew from 385,164 in 1980 to 447,619 at the 1990 census; by 1998 it reached 491,801. Whites constitute 63.9 percent of the population of Fort Worth; blacks, 22.0 percent; Asians and Pacific Islanders, 1.9 percent; and Native Americans, 0.4 percent. Hispanics, who may be of any race, represent 19.2 percent.
The dominant demographic factor in Fort Worth in recent decades has been the growth of the Hispanic population. The Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area grew from 991,000 in 1980 to 1,361,000 in 1990 and to an estimated 1,492,000 in 1995. During this period the Hispanic population doubled. At 11.1 percent of the metropolitan population, Hispanics have replaced blacks (10.6 percent) as the largest minority group in the metropolitan area.
