Conroe, city, seat of Montgomery County, eastern Texas, near Houston; incorporated 1885. It is the processing center of an area producing much petroleum and timber. Houston National Forest and Lake Conroe are nearby. The city is named for Isaac Conroe, whose sawmill on the site was a rail spur terminus. Large-scale petroleum production in the region began in the 1930s.
