Carrollton, city, Collin, Dallas, and Denton counties, northern Texas, on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, a residential and commercial suburb of Dallas; incorporated 1913. Manufactures include computer software, semiconductors, and oil field products. The community, settled in 1844, is likely named for Carrollton, Illinois, the original home of the early settlers. The city experienced enormous growth at the end of the 20th century. Population 40,591 (1980); 82,169 (1990); 109,576 (2000).
