Big Ed's Pizza 101 Broadway Ave - 865.482.4885 Big Ed's is an Oak Ridge tradition. The restaurant is housed in an old, dark, high-ceilinged storefront in Oak Ridge's original townsite district. Under founder "Big Ed" Neusel, the restaurant served up pizza, beer, and soft drinks; jobs for generations of local high school students (many of whom considered Big Ed a second father); support for local high school sports; and local color for myriad U.S. and foreign visitors to the city. \n\nNothing much has changed since Big Ed's death. The restaurant is still operated by members of the Neusel family, still serves the same food and drink, and still is decorated with an eclectic mixture of sports artifacts, memorabilia from past visitors to the restaurant, and photos and caricatures of the oversized figure of Big Ed himself. Review:response to reviewer and "Nothing significant about this place or its food.” I love that quote by the restaurant reviewer. Unfortunately, what is needed in Big Ed’s case is not a snooty reviewer checking the labels on the wine under the counter, but a team of sociologists. I would have to say that "nothing significant about this place or its food” would capture the essence of what makes Big Ed’s great. Big Ed’s captures what is at the heart of East Tennessee. Blue collar, loud, smoky, rough around the edges, hot out of the oven, cold from the tap and sometimes down right rude, in the "unsatisfied customers" case. Big Ed’s is not Mellow Mushroom. It isn’t Dominos or Pizza Hut or Papa John’s or even local favorites Tomato Head or Stefano’s. Big Ed’s is Oak Ridge. It is East TN. And by God, it is good!! Review:Far away from my home........

Sagebrush Steakhouse and Saloon 390 S. Illinois Avenue - 865.481.3077 Regional-chain steakhouse restaurant with bar. \n\nMenu features steak, ribs, and large burgers, plus some chicken entrees for people who are not so aggressively carnivorous. Buckets of heavily salted peanuts are on every table for cracking and munching. Cuisine: Steaks Review:Comments by chefmoz category editor I haven't been to Sagebrush since they remodeled and changed their sign. However, contrary to the experiences with the chain that are reported on Knoxville Dining at a Glance, my past experiences with the Oak Ridge Sagebrush were OK. (Not great, but OK.)

Soup Kitchen, The 47 E. Tennessee Avenue - 865.482.3525 $5.01 - $15 Popular restaurant serving fresh-made homestyle soups and breads for lunch and dinner. Chili is available every day, and sandwiches and salad plates are also offered. Service is cafeteria style. Seating is at wooden tables in several rooms of a World War II-era building, decorated homestyle with an ever-changing array of collectible objects from past eras.\n\nThis restaurant was founded in Oak Ridge, has expanded to add a location at Market Square in Knoxville, and now has franchises. The Oak Ridge location is still operated by the original owners.\n\nThere always seems to be a line during the weekday lunch hour, but the line moves quickly and everyone seems to get a seat. At the dinner hour, there is rarely a crowd and the pace is more leisurely.\n\nBottled beer available (no wine). Cuisine: Deli / Sandwiches
