Aberdeen, city in northeastern South Dakota, seat of Brown County. Situated in a rich grain-producing and livestock-raising area, the city is a trade and transportation center, with stockyards and an ethanol fuel plant. Other manufactures include plastic goods, machinery, and motor-vehicle parts. Northern State University (1902) and Presentation College (1952) are located in Aberdeen. The city was named by a railroad official for his birthplace, Aberdeen, Scotland. The city was incorporated in 1883. Population 25,956 (1980); 24,927 (1990); 24,658 (2000).
