Rock Hill, city, York County, northern South Carolina; incorporated 1892. It is a commercial and residential center. Textiles and wood products are the major manufactures. Winthrop University and a technical college are here. The community was settled in 1852 at the site of a railroad depot. A nearby hill imbedded with flint gave the city its name. Population 35,344 (1980); 41,643 (1990); 49,765 (2000).
