Cowpens, town, Spartanburg County, northwestern South Carolina, in the Piedmont (Piemonte) region, near the Pacolet River. During the American Revolution, the Battle of Cowpens was fought just north of the town on January 17, 1781. Colonial forces under General Daniel Morgan won the battle and sent the British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton into a disorderly retreat. The town takes its name from this battle, which was named for the empty cow pens located near the battlefield. Cowpens National Battlefield (established 1929 as a national battlefield site, redesignated 1972) encompasses the site.
