Anderson, city in northwestern South Carolina, seat of Anderson County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Manufactures include textiles, electrical machinery, and fiberglass products. A junior college is in Anderson, and the large Hartwell Reservoir is nearby. The community, founded in 1826 as the county seat, is named for General Robert Anderson, a hero of the American Revolution. It was incorporated as a city in 1882. Population 27,965 (1980); 26,184 (1990); 25,514 (2000).
