Williamsport, city, seat of Lycoming County, north central Pennsylvania, on the western branch of the Susquehanna River; incorporated as a city 1866. It is a manufacturing and distribution center. Major products include airplane engines, electronic equipment, machinery, fabricated metal, processed food, furniture, and textiles. Williamsport is the site of Lycoming College (founded as the Williamsport Academy in 1812), and the Lycoming County Historical Society and Museum. It also contains the headquarters of Little League Baseball, Incorporated (founded 1939), which holds the Little League World Series here annually. The community, settled in the late 18th century, developed as a lumbering center during the 1840s. The economy was diversified after local timber supplies were depleted in the 1920s. Population 33,401 (1980); 31,933 (1990); 30,706 (2000).
