Wilkinsburg, borough, Allegheny County, southwestern Pennsylvania, a residential community adjoining Pittsburgh; settled late 18th century, incorporated 1887. Successively called McNairsville and then Rippeyville, the community was renamed in 1840 for William Wilkins, a U.S. senator and later secretary of war under President John Tyler. Population 23,669 (1980); 21,080 (1990); 19,196 (2000).
