Titusville, city, Crawford County, northwestern Pennsylvania, on Oil Creek; incorporated as a city 1866. It is an industrial center located in an agricultural and dairy farming region. Products include textiles, lumber, steel, metal goods, and electronic equipment. The University of Pittsburgh, Titusville Campus (1963) is here. The community was founded in 1796 by the surveyor Jonathan Titus, for whom it is named. In August 1859, the first commercially successful oil well was drilled in the area, and the town grew as an oil-producing and -refining center. Natural gas began to be produced on a large scale in the region in the 1870s. Oil refining in the city ended by the 1950s.
