Carlisle, borough, seat of Cumberland County, southern Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg; incorporated 1751. It is a manufacturing and educational center. Manufactures include carpets, shoes, tires, and quartz crystals. Carlisle is the seat of Dickinson College, Dickinson School of Law (1834), and the United States Army War College. The borough served (1794) as George Washington's headquarters during the Whiskey Rebellion and was later a stop on the Underground Railroad. From 1879 to 1918 it was the site of the Carlisle Indian School. It is named for Carlisle, England.
