Canonsburg, borough, Washington County, southwestern Pennsylvania; incorporated 1802. It is an industrial center located in an agricultural and coal-mining area; major manufactures include metal products and pottery. Settled about 1773, the community was platted in 1787 by Colonel John Canon (hence its name). The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, a protest against a federal excise tax, was organized here at the Black Horse Tavern.
