Roseburg, city in southwestern Oregon on the Umpqua River. Located about 100 km (60 mi) south of Eugene, Roseburg is the seat of Douglas County. Situated amid the Douglas-fir stands of the Cascade Range (to the east) and Coast Ranges (to the west), Roseburg has prospered through the 20th century as the focal point for a vast logging and lumbering industry. Tourism is also an important aspect of the economy, and the city functions as a gateway to Crater Lake National Park, located about 100 km (60 mi) to the southeast. A community college is located 8 km (5 mi) north of the city. Originally known as Deer Creek, Roseburg is named for Aaron Rose, who settled the city's bowl-shaped valley in 1851. The Oregon and California (now Southern Pacific) Railroad arrived in 1872, stimulating growth, and the city was incorporated the same year. Population 16,644 (1980); 17,032 (1990); 20,017 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
