The population of the city of Portland increased from 366,383 in 1980 to 437,319 in 1990. Much of the increase came from the annexation of neighborhoods on the east side of the city. The population of the Portland metropolitan area grew from 1,334,000 in 1980 to 1,515,000 in 1990. It has continued to surge in the 1990s because of the growth of the electronics industry and the attractive quality of life in the Portland area. By 1998 the population of the city had reached 503,891; the population of the metropolitan region was estimated to be 1,710,260 in 1995.
In the 19th century Portland had large Chinese, Scandinavian, and Italian immigrant communities. Today, however, little remains of these early communities, and the city has relatively small minority populations. According to the 1990 census, whites are 84.8 percent of the population, blacks 7.6 percent, Asians and Pacific Islanders 5.2 percent, and Native Americans 1.2 percent. The remainder are of mixed heritage or did not report ethnicity. Hispanics, who may be of any race, are 3.0 percent of the people. Asians and Hispanics have been the most rapidly growing population groups since 1980.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
