Oregon (OR), Klamath Falls - Pictures

Klamath Falls, city in southern Oregon, about 90 km (about 55 mi) east of Medford. Klamath Falls is located in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range at an elevation of 1224 m (4015 ft). The city contains the 2.4-km (1.5-mi) Link River, which connects Upper Klamath Lake to Lake Ewauna. The seat of Klamath County, Klamath Falls is the home of the Oregon Institute of Technology (founded in 1947) and the Favell Museum of Western Art and Artifacts. The city also serves as a southern gateway to Crater Lake National Park, which is located about 80 km (about 50 mi) north of the city. Natural hot water from geothermal wells heats many homes, businesses, and schools. Several nearby wildlife refuges provide homes to white pelicans, snow geese, and bald eagles. Originally settled in the 1860s and known as Linkville for the river that flows through it, Klamath Falls was incorporated as a town in 1889 and as a city in 1905. The development of an irrigation project (the Klamath Project) in 1906 and the advent of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1909 helped Klamath Falls to thrive, and it became a center for lumbering and agriculture. The name Klamath Falls, adopted in 1893, comes from the Klamath people, a local Native American tribe, and from falls on the Link River. Population 16,661 (1980); 17,737 (1990); 18,538 (1998 estimate).
