The Dalles, officially City of The Dalles, city, seat of Wasco County, northern Oregon, on the Columbia River; incorporated as a city 1857. It is a deepwater port, with fruit and lumber produced in the region shipped from here; aluminum is manufactured. A community college is here. The site was first settled by missionaries in 1838. Permanent settlement dates from 1847 when a trading post was built. The community became a terminus of the Oregon Trail. The rapids here were bypassed by a ship canal in 1915 and submerged in 1957 with the construction of The Dalles Dam. Its name is derived from les dalles (“the flagstones”), given by French-Canadian explorers to the basaltic rocks on the river. Population 10,820 (1980); 9,422 (1990); 12,156 (2000).Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
