Bend, in central Oregon, on the Deschutes River. Located in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range, Bend lies about 169 km (about 105 mi) southeast of Salem. The seat of Deschutes County, Bend has grown rapidly since 1970 as a center for summer and winter recreation. Popular recreation destinations in the vicinity include Deschutes National Forest and Mount Bachelor ski area, and resort communities are located nearby. Bend is the site of a community college. South of the city are the High Desert Museum, which features a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits on nature, arts, science, and history, and the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The city developed around Farewell Bend, one of the few points where a wagon could easily cross the Deschutes River. It was incorporated in 1905 and grew rapidly after 1911, when the arrival of the Northern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads triggered a boom in lumbering and irrigated farming.
