Okmulgee, city, seat of Okmulgee County, east central Oklahoma; incorporated 1900. It is a manufacturing center in an agricultural area that also produces petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Major products include refined petroleum, glass, and processed food. Oklahoma State University at Okmulgee (1946), one of the country's largest residential technical colleges, and the Creek Council House Museum (1878), containing Native American art and artifacts, are here. Lake Okmulgee is nearby. The site of the city has served as the capital of the Creek tribe since 1868. It was settled by non-Native Americans in 1872 and flourished after the discovery of oil deposits in 1904.
