Muskogee, city, seat of Muskogee County, eastern Oklahoma, a port at the confluence of the Arkansas, Verdigris, and Grand rivers; incorporated 1898. It has grain elevators and plants making glassware, ventilating equipment, optical machinery, and paper products. A junior college is also here. Fort Gibson (1824), the state's first U.S. military post, is nearby. The community was founded along a newly constructed road in 1872 and named for the Muscogee (Creek) people. In 1875 the Indian administration agency for the Five Civilized Tribes established its headquarters (now a museum) here. The Arkansas River Navigation Channel, providing access to the Gulf of Mexico, was opened in 1971.
