Enid, city, seat of Garfield County, northern Oklahoma; incorporated 1894. It is a commercial, manufacturing, and shipping center, located in a region known for its production and processing of grain and petroleum. Other industries include aircraft maintenance and the production of oil-field equipment and fertilizer. Phillips University (1906) and a historical museum are here. Vance Air Force Base is nearby. The community was established overnight as a tent town in 1893 when the Cherokee Strip was opened to settlement. It was named by a railroad official for a character in Idylls of the King (1859-1885) by the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
