Altus, city in southwestern Oklahoma. Altus is the seat of Jackson County and the center of an irrigated cotton- and wheat-growing area, where cattle, horses, and racing greyhounds are also raised. Altus Air Force Base and a junior college are in Altus. The community, founded nearby as Frazer about 1887, was flooded in 1891, prompting its relocation to its present higher ground—hence its current name, Latin for “high.” Altus was incorporated in 1919.
