North Olmsted, city, Cuyahoga County, northeastern Ohio; incorporated as a city 1950. It is primarily a residential suburb of Cleveland and has some industrial firms. Settled in 1815 as Kingston, it was renamed about 1829 for Aaron Olmstead, a Connecticut merchant who in the early 19th century had purchased the section of the old Western Reserve on which the settlement was established. The area remained chiefly agricultural until the 1950s, when the city began a period of rapid growth. Population 36,486 (1980); 34,204 (1990); 34,113 (2000).
