Niles, city, Trumbull County, northeastern Ohio, on the Mahoning River, near Warren; incorporated as a city 1895. Manufactures include steel, specialty metals, and motor-vehicle equipment. President William McKinley was born here and is commemorated by a large memorial, which houses the McKinley Library and a museum. The city was founded in 1806 as Heaton's Furnace, an iron-working center. In 1834 it was renamed Nilestown (shortened to Niles in 1843) for Hezekiah Niles, a journalist.
