Mentor, city in Lake County, in northeastern Ohio, near Lake Erie, northeast of Cleveland. Mentor was incorporated as a township in 1815, and as a city in 1963. Manufactures include fork lifts and electronic components and equipment. Lawnfield, the home (now a museum) of United States President James A. Garfield and a community college are in Mentor. The community, settled by whites in 1797, was mostly rural until the 1960s, when it grew as a suburb and center of light manufacturing. It is named for Hiram Mentor, an early settler.
