Massillon, city, Stark County, northeastern Ohio, on the Tuscarawas River; incorporated as a city 1868. It is a manufacturing and distribution center for a rich agricultural area. Products include processed food; motor-vehicle parts; containers; plastic, paper, and metal items; chemicals; and printed materials. The Massillon Museum and several historic homes are here. The community, settled about 1810, was laid out in 1826 and named for Jean Baptiste Massillon, a bishop of Clermont, France. It grew with the completion (1832) of the Ohio and Erie Canal and the arrival (1852) of the railroad.
