Lorain, city, Lorain County, northern Ohio, on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Black River, near Cleveland; incorporated as a city 1874. It is a major lakeport and a manufacturing center; products include steel, metal goods, communications equipment, building products, and motor vehicles. The Lorain Palace Civic Center (1928), located here, is the home of a community theater group. A trading post was established here in 1807, and the community that developed was known as Canesadooharie. In 1836 the name was changed to Charlestown, and in 1874 the present name was adopted (in honor of the historic province of Lorraine, France). Economic development was spurred by the coming of the railroad in 1872; steel production began here in 1894. The city was badly damaged by a tornado in 1924.
