Kettering, city, Montgomery County, southwestern Ohio, a residential and industrial suburb of Dayton; settled 1797, incorporated as a city 1955. Motor-vehicle parts, aerospace equipment, machinery, paper products, rubber, plastics, and fabricated metal are among the city's manufactures. A large research and development complex and the Kettering College of Medical Arts (1967) are here. The community was a stone-quarrying center during the early 19th century, and was named Van Buren Township in 1841. In 1952 its name was changed to honor the inventor Charles F.
