Kent, city, Portage County, northeastern Ohio, on the Cuyahoga River, near Akron; settled about 1805, incorporated 1920. It is the seat of Kent State University (1910). Manufactures include motors, metal products, and plastics. Originally named Franklin (later Franklin Mills), the community was named in 1867 for Marvin Kent, who was instrumental in bringing the railroad shop yards here in 1863. In 1970, during an antiwar protest, four university students were killed by the gunfire of U.S. national guardsmen.
