Greenville, city, seat of Darke County, western Ohio, in a rich agricultural region; platted 1808, incorporated as a city 1902. Manufactures include filters, glass products, clothing, automotive parts, appliances, and processed food. Fort Greene Ville (named for the American Revolution general Nathanael Greene) was built on this site by General Anthony Wayne in 1793. An important peace treaty, in which nine tribes (including the Kaskaskia, Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Miami) ceded much of the Northwest Territory to the United States, was signed here in 1795.
