East Liverpool, city, Columbiana County, eastern Ohio, on the Ohio River, across from West Virginia and near the Pennsylvania border; incorporated 1834. The city is known for its pottery industry, which is supplied by the vast clay deposits of the area. The community was settled in 1798, and the first pottery operations were established here in 1840. It is named for Liverpool, England, in recognition of the many English potters who settled here.
