Ashtabula, city in Ashtabula County, northeastern Ohio, on Lake Erie, at the mouth of the Ashtabula River. A port of entry on the St. Lawrence Seaway, the city is an important transportation center for iron ore and coal. Major manufactures include fiberglass, plastics, and rubber products. A branch of Kent State University (1958) is located in Ashtabula, as well as the Hubbard House, the end of the line on the Underground Railroad. The community was settled in 1801, and its name is derived from an Algonquian term probably meaning “river of many fish.” Ashtabula was incorporated in 1891.
