Mandan, city, seat of Morton County, southern North Dakota, on the Missouri River opposite Bismarck, and on the Heart River; incorporated 1881. It is a transportation and farm-trade center, with a large livestock market. Manufactures include refined petroleum and construction materials. The community was settled (1873) with the arrival of railroad survey crews and the building of nearby Fort Lincoln (now partly reconstructed in a state park).
