Salisbury, city, seat of Rowan County, central North Carolina; incorporated 1755. Manufactures include textiles, building materials, aluminum foil, furniture, and dairy products. Catawba College (1851) and Livingstone College (1879) are here. During the American Civil War, Salisbury was the site of a Confederate prison camp in which several thousand Union prisoners died; they are buried in a national cemetery here. The city probably is named for Salisbury, England.
