Gastonia, city, seat of Gaston County, southwestern North Carolina, on the Catawba River, on the Piedmont Plateau; settled late 1700s, incorporated 1877. It is an industrial hub located near Charlotte; manufactures include textiles, machinery, metal products, and plastics. The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium is here, and Belmont Abbey College (1876) is nearby. The city is named for William Gaston, a state legislator and judge.
