Watervliet, city, Albany County, eastern New York, on the Hudson River opposite Troy, near Albany; incorporated as a city 1896. A U.S. arsenal here has been producing ordnance since 1813; abrasives and stainless steel also are manufactured. The site, settled by the Dutch about 1630, was surveyed about 1650. In 1776 the first American colony of Shakers was founded in the area. Watervliet is near the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal (now part of the New York State Canal System). Industrialized after the canal opened in 1825, the city was an iron-manufacturing center from 1861 to 1970.
