Valley Stream, village, Nassau County, southeastern New York, on western Long Island; incorporated 1925. It is a residential community near New York City and has some industry. Ocean beaches are nearby. Settled in 1647, the community was mainly a farming hub until it grew as a residential center after World War I; the village experienced a period of rapid development following World War II. Population 35,769 (1980); 33,946 (1990); 36,368 (2000).
